OK, perhaps discussed here before, but I missed it. When is a boat:
an Overnighter vs.
a Weekender; or
a Cruiser;
a Motoryacht; or
just a Yacht?

It seems in the past few years many of the manufacturers have taken liberties when describing their models.

Personally, it's in the 'Yacht' catagory when you step onto it and NO movement occurs.

A YACHT means that every repair job is going to cost at a minimum $1,000 ;-)

All boats I've owned became yachts when it was time to sell them :)

You mean $10,000.

$1000 repairs are on boats, not yachts.

Yacht more or less fits under the category of "when you see one you will know it". Many years ago, when my dad was Commodore of the Harveys Lake Boat Club in Pennsylvania he had the name changed to Harveys Lake Yacht Club even though it was almost exclusvively smaller racing class sailboats under 20'. His reasoning was that as a "Yacht" Club they would have reciprocal privileges when visiting other Yacht Clubs around the country. It worked. Some will say that a yacht should be large and have sleeping quarters. Working boats are usually not considered yachts.

During marriage you both own and enjoy a nice boat. During divorce you p!ssed away thousands on that damn yacht.

If you are purchasing it is a yacht and worth a fortune, if you are selling it is a boat and someone will take it off your hands. Seriously, I don't know that their are specific parameters, but by the time you are around 25ft a boat (yacht) has a NMMA Yacht Certification which basically states the boat was manufactued in compliance with NMMA standards and does not list a specific capacity. Smaller yachts (boats) have a USCG capacity plate that specifies total persons and weight.

WEll I had a secretary who got on our 45' three stateroom Silverton and said it was not a yacht. She said yachts were big, not sure what big is in her minimum wage mind.

Sea Ray calls all their boats 31'-52' Sport Yachts & 52' & over just Yachts?
I'd call anything over 38' with a bridge a yacht. With no bridge 40' but that's just me?

A yacht is when you have to call a dozen marinas to find a travelift that is big enough to haul you.

LOL - that would be nice... but when the Admiral commands that we make way for some unknown cove or port every few weeks, the fuel bill often exceeds the insurance bill each season :-(

Hmmm, we never say we are going "yachting", it's always "boating", I never go out in the "yacht" it's always the "boat" should this site be called "yachtered.com"? Sounds like we all have fun on our "boat" and stay stressed about the size and cost of our "yachts".

A yacht usually has a pole sticking up in the middle of it sommewhere with some clothlike material attatched to it so that it provides propulsion from the wind. I would think that such a vessel would also be capable of crossing an ocean in reasonable safety & comfort.

Lots of manufacturers build what they term as MOTORyachts though many should not be seen 5 miles offshore never mind 500 miles.

Somehow I just can't get my head around calling something that looks more like an oversized tennis shoe a MOTORyacht no matter its length. It is just a plastic fantastic. It needs to have more of a boaty look to be called a motoryacht.

Considering that small sailboats are regularly said to engage in yacht racing IMO the manner of use is more important to the yacht designation than size.

I always considered a boat a yacht when you need a crew to drive it and maintain it. Or when they have a tender on their bow that is a large as my boat. Anything smaller than that and larger than my boat I consider those BFB :)

Well I thought the definition was a the boat needs a head with a shower, hot and cold water, Air conditioning and heat, one or more staterooms, a salon and working galley. A boat a couple can live on for extended periods of time. I would add entertainment systems, refrigeration, communications gear, and access to the internet. Now make your own water, add solar and treat waste whats left? Plenty.

If there are 2 different 50 ft+ craft and 1 has a hired captain and the other does not does that mean only the one with the hired captain is a yacht? Certainly when it comes to defining a yacht size does matter but the exact criteria is subjective.
