What is the problem with dogs? I can understand the loud music and maybe the to many people thing but is it just that dogs are there or are they actually causing a problem? I bring my dogs with me all the time and they are well cared for and minded constantly. If they start to get out of hand they are put back in the boat. If they start barking I go below to and stay with them. I would have to say that at the few marinas I have been to they all have had many dogs and nobody seems to care.

It actually would be helpful to know which marina it is, for those of us who go on vacation and stay at transient slips.
If the management wanted to stop it, they could do so very easily, seems that they really don't care. |

I don't think you needed to delete most of your original post. The marina sounds like a place I would want to keep at a far distance. I don't understand what complaints the marina had to you. Did they complain about your complaint or did they complain that you weren't loud enough and not joining into the party. |

Navman, WalterV thanks..... he's just very old, thats all. Otherwise he is fine. He just can't hear things like smoke detectors going off, and forgets to turn the stove off. Choking on food seems to happen more often now, and falling outside or down the steps is about 50-50.
He is a sailor and has a sail boat, I'm a power boater. I told him I would not launch my boat this year so I could spend all my boating time taking him sailing.
Nothing is forever, I can always buy another powerboat. I pay for his boat slip, and winter storage, do all the work on the boat, so its just to much to let my boat sit in a slip not being used.

Dogs must be leashed and under control at all times at my marina. They generally discourage bringing dogs there unless they are arriving or departing with boats. The potential for bites and messy docks is the problem.
Very loud music is discouraged at all times. Loud music is OK during parties before 10 p.m.
At least one management person can be found on the premises at all times. They respond to complaints.
Every marina has different rules.
Foreign music isn't that bad. How about Beethoven?

Their complaining to me was in general conversation, they think of me like an adopted son.
I never complained to them, its in full view from the marina office.
They are afraid to bitch at the boaters because these are hard times for some marinas.
So they vent when possible, to friendly ears.
My post was more about marina etiquette. |

Our marina requires that pets be kept on leash's and all children must wear life jackets on the docks. Lowd music is discouraged in the evenings for the most part but tolerated if it doesn't get out of control or complaints made. To be honest our row of slips are very much like a social gathering in the evenings where everyone gathers to eat and socialize and sometimes the socializing can get a little noisy and last past the normal 10PM quiet time and once in a while someone may complain from another part of the marina but most at the marina do visit with others and join in the socializing as it is usually just casual in nature and not anything like a wild party with load music or anything like that. |

| My marina does not require life jackets on children ... I do!!! No matter how close you watch kids, the unexoected can happen .. the life jacket is good insurance. I do not insist that my 10 year old grandson wear one, he swims better than I do and is in much better shape!! My 4 year old granddaughter is required to wear one until she is a little older and better coordinated!! |

Pete:
That is fine and that is your choice, and I do not argue that they are "good insurance". The unexpected can happen at any time, to anybody. Heck, you could get hit by a bus crossing the street.
My only point is that there is nothing "errant" about a child fishing off a pier without a life jacket on. |

| It's that "personal responsibility" thing again ... I don't want or need someone to dictate to me how to protect my kids/grandkids, that is my responsibility. The only thing errant about kids fishing off a pier w/o a life jacket is when they fall in the water and drown!! It is important to know your kids abilities!! |

| JLC aren't you in Old Saybrook I have not been there but I planned to visit last year the plans changed. I was under the impression this was a high end marina it surprises me that they would put up with poorly manored boaters I would have a talk with them it may help more than you think. I missed what was deleted but I understand that you are upset and you pay a lot of money to dock there it's worth the talk. There are other marinas in your area they know you have choices as well, they don't want unhappy customers. |

| Here's my two cents: I pay for my dock just like everyone else. No one is more important or entitled to any more than I am. I can bring as many guests (including children) as I like to my boat. I also have a dog (leashed at all times) and play music according to the rules of the marina until 10pm. If you want piece and quiet, stay home. |

| That's not true. I'll welcome anyone at anytime to my boat. I paid for my dock after reading the rules of the marina about loud music after 10:00 and pets allowed as long as they're leashed. I don't need someone complaining that I'm too loud, my dog barks, my kids laugh too loud, etc. I am there to enjoy myself just like everyone else. If the original poster doesn't like kids, dogs, or music, he shouldn't be at that marina. |

Don't blame the dog, blame the owner. Typically if the dog is out of control so are the kids. For those who don't think young children need life jackets, have never brought up a drowned child, and seen the look on the parents face. If your not going to watch them every minute, put the life jacket on, it's safer and worrying about them falling in.
FWI: Yes I have recovered more drowned people than I care to think about, it isn't a pretty sight. |

No.... My Summer marina is in Mystic, my winter marina is elsewhere but not in Old Saybrook.
Its my winter marina that has the problems in the summertime.
My summer marina is awesome and is perfect.
My winter marina is awesome and perfect.....in the winter.... summer is a different story....but I'm not there in the summer as its to far away from Block Island, Nantucket etc.
I was considering leaving my boat in its winter marina as I will be selling it and its closer to my house than my summer marina.
When I go to a marina, I usually just get on my boat and go anywhere else, many people come down and just stay at the marina.
Its just weird how two handfuls of people can "take over" a marina.
Its really not that important ...just a another topic to read. |

| Looking at the photos makes me want to dock at that marina. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, including the dog, and nobody seems even slightly out of control. The marina we've been at for a number of years has some very nice people there; but you rarely see anyone. With our new boat, we're loking to move to a different marina, closer to home. We've been visiting various marinas, looking for the "perfect" one. I know we won't find it; I'm hoping we'll find one in which we will fit in and will feel comfortable. The annual costs vary over a range of 3000 to 4000 dollars for a 24' boat, so it's not cheap. We just don't want to squander money at a place where we won't be happy. I love kids, dogs, and music, but there must be some control so no one gets hurt and people can enjoy the peace and quiet of the water. Everything in balance - great concept. Safe boating, all. Hy |

Does everyone really dislike the dogs that much or the owners who do not make them mind?

I don't think too many people dislike dogs, the problem is the owners who let their dogs run all over when they're not supposed to, think nothing of leaving constantly barking dogs on the boat all day, etc... We have friends who we've done boating trips with who leave their dog loose in the cockpit of their boat but he's not trained well enough to stay there. So when someone (or another dog) walks by that catches his attention he'll jump off the boat and go running down the dock barking like he's on the attack. Then when someone says something they're like "oh, he's harmless, he just wants to play". Well, the people who don't know him who see him running/barking down the dock at them don't know that. Same with the constantly barking dogs, if your dog is like that maybe being in a marina where the boats are a foot away from each other isn't the right environment to bring them then... I love dogs, had them all my life until a couple years ago, but I can see how people can get frustrated because of a handful of problem cases.
Same thing with the music, too many people are either oblivious to the close proximity of everyone in a marina or just don't care. Although it seems that has been getting better the last couple seasons at the marinas we usually go to. Not sure if people are starting to catch on that it's rude to share your music with the whole marina or just less people going out with the economy bad.
Having said that, different marinas have different atmospheres, and if a marina is a party place and everyone else is okay with that and you prefer quiet than better to go someplace else.

Oh please, haven't you ever seen a marina cable TV cord before? I guess letting them droop towards the water is dangerous as well?
I mean they may have microscopic holes that lets the electricity leak out!

Don't forget the under age drinking, animal abuse, large amounts of sun exposed pink flesh, stolen public property (note the street sign at the end of the dock), at least one real power cord that appears to be in the water, public shower that I bet was put up without the proper permit, child walking the dock with out a proper PFD, etc., etc.
This is truly a marina in need of some proper management.

Marinas can be a kick and develop a culture of their own, especially if liveaboards are permitted. Sometimes weekenders can rule on weekends and liveaboards reign supreme the rest of the time.
We have some medium sized dogs so I'm not one to complain about them.
I do get worried about some of the lap dogs I see at our marina. We have some raccoons and otters that are big and bold enough to show up anytime on the docks and they could have a Shih-Tzu for lunch. Chinese, anyone?

very observant, Capt. Bill!
However, the young lady walking on the dock is 13 YO and a competent swimmer.
The sign is actually a custom made sign which reads, "Governor" and points to the boat owned by the Governor of B dock, known here as Caryl-D. No under age drinking, it's just that our women all never age. The shower is private, for the use of B dock only.
We manage to have a great time every weekend, whether it is at the dock or out rafted up. |

What about the dish? I hope it is properly grounded and has a dedicated galvanic isolator. Would be a pain if the concerned slip neighbor unplugged the dish during Shipshape TV. |

I'm with you on this one Hogan, when we go to the boat it's time to relax and kinda just let it all hang out and enjoy the other boaters company. Just to be clear our marina is a "gated" community so there realy aren't ant strangers and we all know each other very well and while you will allways have little clicks and different personalities to deal with we are very much like one big family getting together for the weekend for some fun and relaxation. For those times when one may want quiet and seclusion thats what the boat and a quiet cove are for. I love the experience of being able to meet and socialize in such a close and social gathering with all the other boaters at our marina and wouldn't have it any other way. |

Dogs, to many guests & loud foreign music
I'm still stuck at "loud foreign music". Does that mean that loud domestic music is ok? Why does the foreign part matter? If it's Italian Operas then I can understand, that would be really boring at a dock. |

| The music is only loud if you have not been invited to the party. |
