I finally pulled the trigger and ordered a new Radar system. I just wanted to thank Les for taking the time and walking me through the purchase it was a pleasure talking to him.

I can't wait to install the new equipment and learn how to use it before my upcoming trip.

Rommer your last post about the fog on your return trip was all I needed to convince me to not only order the radar but a second display as well. Glad to hear you made it back safely and hope you are feeling better.

Dave,
I guess you have not experienced fog coming on or off Block. Since we have been going there, you usually get it one way or the other. What did you purchase?

It was pretty nasty last year on my return trip from Block and it's always bad when I go to Essex. I have been procrastinating for the last few weeks Rommer's post just made me realize I'm running out of time. I wasn't planning on buying a new radar at all but my open array died a sudden death. After picking many brains including BillyIII I decided to order a Garmin GMR 18HD and a second 4208 display. I also ordered a combo mount so I can easily add a satellite unit next season (I hope). I didn't get anything near as nice as your mount but it should do the trick. Now I'm just sitting and reading the manuals so I'm ready for the install when it gets here (which Les assured me would be soon, hopefully early next week). I hope you enjoyed your trip last week I'm surprised there weren't more pictures posted. If you are interested in another trip we are leaving on the 7th for a week. I hope we have as good weather as you guys had.

Dave

Dave, why would you order/need a second display? Where are you going to put it?

With the proper tools, training and experience using said tools fog does not have to be a fearful situation. Doesn't mean you should discount the dangers of running in fog but it sure is less stressful!

BTW - please use the new RADAR as much as you possibly can in GOOD conditions BEFORE you are required to use it in bad conditions. The more you use it the better you'll get at interpreting the echoes and their meanings.

I just don't understand when I ask someone why the RADAR is off and they say I only use it when the visibility is low why they choose to ignore such valuable training time.

When working my radar is always on when I'm moving, if for no other reason to see what is behind me.

Rommer I agree having the tools and not knowing how to use them is pointless. I'm sure I will be spending hours learning the new hardware before my trip. My biggest fear in fog is the other boaters who haven't got a clue what they are doing and driving full speed in total blindness with no radar or knowledge to use it if they had. I'm a bit of an electronics nut and I use everything I can to the fullest.

Hogan I will install the new display where my old radar display was. I'm a strong believer in having a dedicated screen for radar it's much easier to see the targets. I had considered trying to use my single display and either splitting the screen or using overlay but in bad weather I would prefer having a full screen I think it will help the stress level.

I will network the displays so I may still use the overlay feature on the chart plotter as well, it can't hurt if I see something I can double check the other display to confirm.

I'm confident I made the right choices with the equipment and I look forward to using them. I just hope the install goes smoothly I don't have much time if something goes wrong.

Les I can't thank you enough. I spent the last several hours drilling holes in my radar arch I should be able to finish the mount install and the display tomorrow, the radar unit will be a peace of cake when it gets here.

I was blown away when my wife call and said they just delivered two packages. It was at my door in under 20 hours truly amazing.

Have a great weekend.

Final update, everything is installed and working I hope to get out and use the system a little over this weekend before I go away next week. I like the way the displays link together so easy and share all the data. This was an easy install and seems to be everything I expected.

Personally, I'm a little worried about Les. I ordered some anodes yesterday from BoatFix, and I made a typo on my credit card number. Elaine called me and we got it worked out. But I asked if Les was grumpy and she said he was in a "great mood". I'm thinking Oxycontin perhaps? :-)
