We have an Achilles 10' with wood floor. Looking for an 8-9.9 engine. I believe short shaft is better but could it take a long shaft engine? What would be the pros and cons if there's a choice?

Work is something I do between fishing trips!

I am no expert but I would think that a short shaft is probably the way to go as long shafts are only needed when the OB is attached to a high transom.

Transom height dictates shaft length but given the choice,
I would use a short shaft for reasons of weight, storage.

Read the motor's manual for ideal placement of the anti-cavitation plate. My motor requires it be about 2 inches below the transom and 6 inches under the surface of the water. This will probably lead you to a short shaft. Sometimes, less is better.

BTW, my 9.5 Achilles with a wood floor takes a short shaft.
