I am in the process of getting everything ready to replace all the bellows on my 1979 Formula 233 which has twin Mercruiser 470 engines and outdrives and I have two questions, maybe more later.

Does the lower shift cable have to be remove inorder to change it's bellows?

And if so how did you reach the lower shift cables inside the transom and under the engines, to remove the wrapping inorder to pull the cable through without pulling one of the engines?

Thanks for the help!

I don't think the cable has to be removed, just disconected and pulled back enough to replace the bellows. If you are going to the trouble of replacing the bellows I would consider replacing the shift cable also. Whether you are doing it yourself or having it done, the cost difference is just he cable which I think us < $100.

Thanks Billk for the reply.

Replacing it is my thought also but the access ability to remove it is a big problem, there is no room around the engines to get down and back under the engines to remove the wrapping so that you can pull it through. Therefore I was considering leave them since they seem to be working freely.

But then after putting it all back togrther, they will fail, thin I will be kicking myself.

Thanks again!

That sheathing / wrap protects the cable if it rubs againsed the exhaust -- the cable will get stuck if you don't remove it. I'm sure there is a trick on that boat -- I bet access in a 23' boat with twin big blocks is tight.

470 is the Mercruiser Model only 4 cylinders, not a big block, but still very tight access.
I did find out that the way the ends are on the shift cable it has to come all the way out to replace the shift cable bellows, but I was able to pull the cable out without removing the spiral wrap.
Everything is coming together nicely at this time.
Thanks again for the come back.

that sheating does sh.t to protect cable from exhaust and cable has to be routed with loose wire ties away from hot exhaust
